cell phone policy

cell phone policy

We know what you’re thinking – you want to be able to contact your camper at ALL TIMES!  We get it.  There is so much to be excited about and worry about as they are away from home.

We only have two reasons for not allowing cell phones or smart devices at camp:
  1. We want them to grow in confidence and independence. We believe the Bible camp experience has incredible value in the development of our campers’ faith, self-confidence, and character and they need a sense of independence in order to grow. If they have issues at camp, we want them to tell their cabin leader, who then can tell their supervisor, who then can contact the program director. That way, we can care for them and build trust together. We love going above and beyond to care for our campers and want the opportunity to serve them, ESPECIALLY if they are having a hard time.
  2. We want them to experience Sabbath. We want the outside world to be left behind FOR A REASON!  First of all, a screen break is beneficial for our mental health. Secondly, there are constant stressors on our youth in their regular life. The beauty of summer camp is that they can feel free, within a bubble, in a harbor of safe space where they can escape from the cliques of school, the demanding schedule of activities and responsibilities, and can meet God within the rich beauty of Creation all around them.

This means that kids have to step out of their comfort zone a bit. They have to problem solve, forge new relationships, remember to brush their teeth, and learn to trust new people. What a gift we can give our kids when we allow them the freedom to spread their wings, especially in a faith-filled, safe and supportive environment!

The bottom line is that cell phones are a major distraction from many of the things that make camp impactful. Simply having a phone near is a pretty irresistible temptation for most kids. Escaping into a game, checking in on friends at home, potentially accessing inappropriate web content while away from home... there are countless ways that phones pull kids away from being truly present while at camp.

Parents, we ask for your support in this. We do not allow phones or screens of any kind at camp. Before coming to camp, we ask that you collect these devices from the camper and have a conversation about our no electronics policy. Please do not “sneak” a device into your child’s bag. If phones or other electronics are discovered at camp, we will safely store them until the end of the week. Camp is not liable for any electronic devices broken or stolen while at camp.

For your peace of mind, please know that Water's Edge Ministries prides itself on having highly trained staff and strong safety procedures in place. In the event that an emergency arises or we feel you need to be contacted for any reason, we will do so! We know that it is hard to be disconnected for the week, but the benefits your child will gain are worth it!

If you have questions or want further clarification about this policy, please contact us at 320-796-2181.
