What if I am not available for the entire summer?
If you are feeling the call to serve this summer, we want to talk with you! Depending on your availability, it is possible to be hired for a shorter commitment. Ideally participation in staff training is preferred with an additional 2-3 week commitment. BUT, talk to us and let’s work together to see how you can be part of our summer community.
If you only have a few weeks of availability, consider applying as a Guide or Food Service Coordinator with Serve Boldly, a GLLM ministry. Learn more here.
Can I get time off during the summer for family vacations, graduations, weddings, etc.?
Yes! We know that vacations and family events are an important part of life and we will work with you to make your time off possible. We do expect that you communicate these dates to us as early as possible. We must know about full weeks off before the start of summer. If not enough lead time is given, time off may not be possible.
How does time off work on the weekends? How much time do we get off between camp weeks?
Staff working programs at Shores of St. Andrew or Green Lake Bible Camp start their week on Sunday, mid-morning, and are generally off by noon on Friday. Between Friday noon and Sunday morning, staff are free to do what they need to renew and rejuvenate. You are welcome to stay at camp, or leave the site to visit friends and family.
*If you are on a Day Camp for the week, you may be asked to start earlier on Sunday, as many churches request your presence at their Sunday morning worship services. Day camps may also have programming on Friday.
There are a few weekends during the summer that are contracted, on-site weekends:
Camp House - Because the program at Camp House runs on a different schedule, those staff will have time off at different times during the week. The exact days will be determined by the schedule and coordinated with the Site Director.
When is staff training? What if I can’t make it to all of staff training?
Staff Training is a vital piece of preparing for summer camp. If we do it with campers, we’ll learn and experience it during training. It’s a ton of fun and a great way to build community with your fellow staff members.
What is your philosophy around cell phones and electronics?
Throughout the summer, use of cell phones/electronics will be limited. You WILL be able to use your devices on the weekends, but time will be limited during the week when you are with campers. We encourage all incoming staff members to begin preparing mentally for spending a summer with limited technology use. An “unplugged” summer at camp has many benefits! Being fully present with campers and immersing yourself in the experience of being in God’s creation with a wonderful community is a gift.
What will I do each week?
A traditional summer camp cabin leader at GLLM has a variety of experiences throughout the summer. Cabin Leaders will divide their time during the summer between on-site (Shores, GLBC, Camp House) and on a Day Camp at congregations around Minnesota. Our Program Support Staff Positions tend to stay in the same role throughout the summer but occasionally are asked to help outside of their normal responsibilities. Flexibility is key, and we strive to make sure that your schedule is balanced in a way that allows you to be the most effective in your ministry to campers.
What if I’m not Lutheran? Can I still work at camp?
Yes! We enjoy diversity and the awesome conversations that come with a variety of faith backgrounds and experiences. We are an organization of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, so the theology behind our ministry is rooted in that Lutheran identity. It is expected that you will teach the Bible Study and other theology-based aspects of the camp from the Lutheran perspective. We will have Lutheranism 101 training and dig into our Bible Study as a community.
What are the living arrangements?
Cabin Leaders live in the cabins with campers during the week. All other staff are assigned housing for the season and generally with other team members. . When assigned to Day Camp you will stay with congregation host families. All the living spaces have electricity and either have or are near bathrooms. You will need to bring your own bedding (we suggest a summer-weight sleeping bag or a set of twin and full sheets). Laundry is done off-site.
