What about a quilt auction?
Each year, hundreds of folks make the trip to Spicer to attend the Green Lake Lutheran Ministries Quilt Auction. Under a tent by Green Lake, bidders try to win one of the beautiful handmade quilts of all colors, stitchings, and sizes, donated from all over the world. A crowd of camp counselors show off the quilts, jumping up and down and singing joyfully. Tens of thousands of dollars are raised in an afternoon, supporting the ministry of GLLM. This event has created memories for so many staff alumni, camper families, neighbors, and donors over the years.
What makes the Quilt Auction so special? It’s the hours, talent and dedication stitched in each and every donated quilt; each and every quilt a piece of art. It’s the homemade doughnuts and good strong coffee. It’s the reunions with family members and friends, the creation of new friendships, and memories of the special moments from summers ago spent at camp.
But maybe the most special of all is the community woven into this event. People from all over, coming together for just one day, to support and sustain the ministry that has marked them and changed their lives. Each person impacted by camp in a different way, but each person choosing to give back to this extraordinary place in this moment. It’s the awe of a community coming together to ensure this ministry's legacy and future.
That’s the most special part of the Quilt Auction, and it’s going to be more significant than ever this summer. With the cancellation of summer camp and the uncertainty we are all living in, your gifts and participation in the Quilt Auction will be more important than any other time.
If you have a quilt from the auction at home, pull it out and sit on the couch with it. Nestled under it, the memories and spirit of that day at camp will all come flooding back. The reminders are strong and worth remembering: the shared passion for a place that has touched so many lives, the generosity in a split moment, and the reminder that God has wrapped you and this ministry with care and love.
