We are excited to welcome you to one of our Green Lake Lutheran Ministries sites this summer –and to share the mission of GLLM in action. It is our hope that this information will assure you that we are working hard to provide a safe, vibrant, and fun time for all who participate in a GLLM program this summer. We know it’s a lot of information so thank you for taking the time to read through so we can all have a great summer. First, we invite you to read through the Summer Camp Orientation Packet below.
If you still have questions, more detailed information can be found at below. You are also welcome to contact us at camp@gllm.org or 320-796-2181.
How do I register for summer camp?
Registration is available online and via mail.
What programs are for me?
Programs should be registered for based on the grade your camper has completed by the summer of 2023. To make it easy, we’ve provided detailed descriptions of all our programs online. With a variety of options and many weeks throughout the summer, we hope there is something for everyone!
How much does camp cost?
GLLM uses fee levels for our pricing model, which is explained in detail here. GLLM believes everyone should have the opportunity to attend camp, there are options for those requesting financial assistance. Please check with your congregation as many offer scholarships. In addition, GLLM has scholarships available. To apply, fill out the online form or print a GLLM Scholarship Application to include with your mailed camp registration or contact the camp office at 320-796-2181.
When is my balance due?
Final camper registration fees are due May 22, 2023. If you register for camp after this date, we ask that camp be paid in full prior to arrival.
If I have to make a cancellation, is my deposit refundable?
Cancellations received 30 days before the camper arrival date will receive a full refund minus a $50 administration fee. All other cancellations are non-refundable. Exceptions may be made due to family emergencies and illness.
When do I turn in the Health Form?
Health forms must be updated each year for summer programming. They are a part of your online registration. If you register by mail, please fill out this paper health form (PDF). The health form may be sent to the camp prior to your child’s arrival or you may turn it in on the first day of camp at check-in. If your child has allergies, dietary restrictions/needs, medical concerns, or other concerns that may impact their time at camp, please send health form to us two weeks before their arrival at camp. You may fax it to 320-796-6633, email it to camp@gllm.org or mail it to: Green Lake Lutheran Ministries, Attn: Registrar, 9916 Lake Avenue South, Spicer, MN 56288.
When should we arrive at camp?
When can I pick my child up from camp?
Shores of St. Andrew Bible Camp
For campers who were transported to camp via bus or van from Green Lake Bible Camp, we will plan to arrive in the parking lot below the Stave Chapel at Green Lake Bible Camp at 5:00 p.m. It is important that contact information is shared for the person who is doing pickup as we may need to adjust our pickup time based on the variables that come up with traveling 5 hours. Any travel delays will be communicated via text/email to the primary phone/email for your camper.
What if my child needs to arrive late or leave early?
We are usually able to accommodate those who have minor scheduling conflicts. Please contact our registrar in the office at 320-796-2181 or camp@gllm.org to discuss any late arrivals, early pick-ups, or other scheduling conflicts. Prior communication ensures safety and ease of drop-off/pick-up for those campers and others at camp.
What if I cannot pick up my child?
To ensure the safety of all our campers, we document the name and contact information of the individual who will be picking up each camper. If a direct relative is unable to pick up your camper, please notify us when the camper arrives so we can document your information and that of the individual picking up your child. In the event that your pick-up arrangements change while your child is at camp, please call our camp office at 320-796-2181 and tell us what changes need to be made.
Can my child request a roommate?
Absolutely! In order for this to work effectively, we ask that roommate requests be made 1 week prior to arrival for camp. Requests can be made If you did not make a roommate request when you registered, you can contact our registrar at camp@gllm.org or 320-796-2181. In the case of church groups attending camp together, we do everything we can to get these kids grouped together in a cabin. Roommates must be registered for the same program at camp in order to room together.
What should my child pack?
A sleeping bag, pillow, appropriate clothing, a Bible, and toiletries is a good place to start. You can find a comprehensive packing list at the end of the Summer Camp Orientation Packet.
Can my child bring a cell phone or other electronics?
We ask all campers to leave their cell phones and electronics at home. Camp is a time to unplug and be fully present in a faith and fun filled community. If electronics are brought, camp reserves the right to remove them from the owner to be returned at the end of the week. Camp is not liable for any electronic devices broken or stolen while at camp.
What if my child needs medication while at camp? What if they have a health concern?
We take our camper safety seriously. Upfront and clear communication from home will help us. All of our staff members are trained in First Aid and CPR. Each of our sites will have a Health Aide that is trained to handle basic medical protocol. Prescription medications can be sent to camp, where they will be kept in a safe location and distributed by our Health Aide. All medications must be in the original container with instructions on the label. Please do not send non-prescription drugs with your child to camp. In the event that a more serious health situation arises, we work with our local clinic and have medical professionals on stand-by to help. Parents will be notified should these situations arise.
What if my child has food allergies?
Information such as this should be included in your registration process. In the case of serious food allergies, please contact our registrar at 320-796-2181 at least 2 weeks prior to your child attending camp. This will help us to be prepared in every way possible so your camper has a good experience!
**Special note: All of our sites are peanut free in the summer. We will not serve any food or have any food on-site that contains peanuts. However, we may have food that was processed in a plant that contains peanuts.
How much canteen money should I send with my child?
A suggested amount for the canteen is around $30. Campers have access to the canteen twice each day to purchase snacks, trinkets, and/or apparel. Most snacks run $1-$2, trinkets between $5 and$15, and apparel ranges from $10-$15 for shirts to $30-$45 for sweatshirts. Many parents will choose to leave some money for trinkets or snacks, while saving larger purchases for the beginning or end of the week. We suggest discussing purchasing preferences before your camper arrives.
What is “Dime-a-Time?”
“Dime-a-Time” is a GLLM canteen tradition! Each year we choose a non-profit or other good cause and allow our campers to donate and raise money for it. Campers can choose to donate up to $1 each time they visit the canteen. As incentive, counselors do crazy and fun things as the campers reach certain benchmarks. For example, we’ve had counselors dance the hula, receive a pie in the face, be squirted with mustard, or shave their head. In previous years, our campers have raised money for the ELCA Malaria Campaign, New London’s The Link, and the ELCA’s Young Adults in Global Mission Program.
This year we are supporting The Gathering of Southeast Wisconsin. The Mission of The Gathering is to provide meals and associated services to those who would otherwise go hungry or without. Located in Milwaukee, The Gathering is a volunteer-driven organization that provides 10-11 free meals weekly out of multiple locations. The Gathering also offers services associated with ending hunger and homelessness and works to educate the city of Milwaukee on hunger issues. The Gathering of Southeast Wisconsin is a volunteer location for our Serve Boldly program. Serve Boldly provides youth with the opportunity to accompany and serve their neighbor while deepening an understanding of God’s presence in their lives.
What if there is a storm?
GLLM has thorough procedures in place when one of our camp sites experiences stormy weather. When a storm watch has been issued, all staff are alerted and our programming is changed accordingly. If a storm warning is issued, campers and staff are quickly moved into their designated storm shelter where staff perform skits and lead campers in singing camp songs. The louder the storm, the louder they sing. Designated staff are assigned to keep an eye on the storm and listen to the weather radio reports. Once an all clear has been given by the county or National Weather Service and the area is determined safe, campers and staff will return to normal programming.
Does your camp require background checks on your staff?
All camp employees go through a thorough background check and screening process. We take your camper's safety very seriously!
Can my child call home?
Through the years, we’ve discovered that calling home can detract from the overall camp experience by drawing a camper’s attention away from camp, inhibiting his/her ability to form relationships and learn effectively. However, while most parents won’t hear from their campers, there are a few circumstances that require a call home. If your child becomes sick or injured, you will be notified by our Health Aide. Also, if your child experiences an extreme case of homesickness, their counselor or Assistant Program Director (APD) will contact you and stay with your child while they visit with you.
Can I visit my child while they are at camp?
For many of the same reasons as phone calls, we advise you don’t visit your camper during the week. You are welcome to get your camper settled in upon their arrival and join us for Campapalooza on Thursday (4:00 p.m. at Shores of St. Andrew Bible Camp) with activity rotations for the whole family, includes dinner and ends with a closing worship and sendoff. See When can I pick my child up from camp? above for more specifics.
Can I email my child?
At this time, this is not an option. We suggest sending letters and postcards to your camper. They love mail!
